Amazon Echo Dot 5th Gen

Best Smart Home Hub

The Amazon Echo Dot 5th Gen delivers noticeably better bass than its predecessor, a built-in temperature sensor for smart automations, and can act as an Eero Wi-Fi extender. At under $70 CAD, it's the easiest way to bring Alexa into any room without spending a lot. Tap-to-mute, motion detection, and over 100,000 Alexa skills round out an impressive feature set for the price.

I would assume that this is probably innocuous, since it was sitting there playing jazz music they almost definitely just put it in there to have some music playing and didn't think twice about the optics of it

That is not true anymore. Alexa+ doesn't always need a wake word and it continues to listen.

I've recently bought a 5th gen dot and I like it. I use Spotify but I can have apple music as default streaming service and I can't see why you wouldnt be able to link apple devices

Maybe not I spent all day yesterday demanding a refund on six echo devices which Amazon agreed to allow me to return and I had a Google nest hub at my house within an hour

It's a waste of money, fortunately when i bought it was at 50% discount, but still, waste of money. I basically stopped using it after 3 months of annoying ads, and alexa interrupting or hearing things, or trying to connect to a bluetooth. ... worst of all, amazon has completely sealed the device and made it impossible to root it

You'll get *much better* sound out of a stereo pair of 2nd gen units from eBay, for about the same money. All other functions are comparable. ... If you really like music, you won't be satisfied with the sound of any generation Dot.

I see a lot of negative comments about Alexa+, but my experience over the past couple of months has been very good. ... A+ keeps getting better, but a lot of people don't like it, for a number of reasons.

I have multiple Echo devices and I have had no problem with Alexa+. In fact I was able to set up several routines all by voice. ... It's a great alarm clock, Timer, Music player, podcast player, and more. I also have it linked to my calendar so I can ask whats on my agenda today

I have one of those sitting right behind me, and I think it was a good buy (at $50, sales frequently). Music sound is good, device is responsive. ... The problem is not with the device it's with the software. The new devices come with Alexa+ and that software needs improving. I've seen a lot of threads about breaking home automation.

There are forensics guides to pulling out information from its cache - I've heard techs say something like the last 2-3 minutes of audio at least. A malicious actor could absolutely pull that out remotely in the right circumstances.

If you like it and decide to get a second one you can put them in a group. This way when you play music it plays on both devices. Sounds great this way

My Alexa doesn’t have conversations. The only thing she knows how to say is I’m not sure how to help you with that.

There are definitely people who find the current Alexa+ to be better because she's sassier and more conversational. ... You could try one, Amazon returns are easy. See which personality might fit your needs.

Depende do uso que você pretende fazer. É útil para várias coisas, exceto para ouvir música. A qualidade sonora é bem ruim.

✅ What Works

  • Improved audio with better bass and vocals vs. previous gen — genuinely acceptable for music in small rooms
  • Built-in motion and temperature sensors trigger Alexa routines automatically
  • Acts as a smart home hub supporting Zigbee, Matter, and Thread devices natively
  • Works seamlessly with Canadian ecosystems including Ring cameras and ecobee thermostats

⚠️ Worth Knowing

  • Not a substitute for a dedicated speaker — thin bass compared to bookshelf or soundbar options
  • Always-on microphone is a privacy consideration for those sensitive to always-listening devices
  • Better as part of a whole-home Alexa network than as a standalone device
ClearPick Verdict

Owners still call the Dot the cheapest way into Alexa, and the hardware itself draws little complaint — the speaker is decent for its size and the form factor works anywhere. The complaints are about what it runs: half the mentions report the Alexa experience getting worse, with routines breaking after updates, ads and upsell prompts creeping in, and the assistant mishearing more than it used to. Buy it as a cheap smart-home endpoint; do not expect the software experience owners praised five years ago.
