Frankly, your app gets worse all the time. I don't want ads, recipe suggestions and all the other crap the has been added in the past couple years. I want my OG app that allowed me to connect, set time / temp and notifications. If you drop app support, this will be my last Anova product plain and simple.

I have one and really like it.

Funny I have 2 Anovas and I can't remember the last time I connected either one via WiFi or Bluetooth. I've never installed the app on my current phone so it's been nearly 2 years at a minimum.

I’ve had my OG Anova Wifi+Bluetooth since the beginning and it’s been a champ through all these years.

Was kinda neat but I get if that’s going away Turns out, I won’t even be able to use Bluetooth when I’m home? I have a car that’s 10 years old and can still connect to Bluetooth.

And this is why you want physical buttons on your device. The day Joule kills their support they all become paperweights while the Anovas are still perfectly functional.

Killing app support that should be no problem to continue. ... That's super s****y of them as a company. Well, if I ever upgrade, or it ever dies, I won't buy Anova again next time, that's an easy call. Breville here I come.

2) It is completely NOT understandable to say, "we're yanking away existing functionality." You get that someone would have to be pretty dumb to watch you guys do that and go, "oh that's ok, let's buy another one instead!" If this is the path you guys take, you won't be seeing people like me buy your stuff again.

Was thinking of buying the combi oven, but if There's any chance that 10 years from now, functionality will get shut down because keeping apps up to date is hard, there's no way I'm investing that much money in any of your products.

You're not supposed to think, you're supposed to believe that somehow WiFi and Bluetooth aren't forward and backward compatible, and that your phone couldn't POSSIBLY connect to a BT 2.0 device or whatever, and then send the same commands as always through that link.

Too much liability and their job is to sell you new ones to replace the old ones.

You say you had 10 years of support since you sold the FIRST device that is affected, but seriously that isn’t the question. The question is how long since you sold the LAST that is affected?

There's no reason to drop compatibility when there's basically nothing to a circulator except a sliver of very basic variables that can manage the PID and a timer. Any app to control those things are mostly bloatware used to push new devices, dropping compatibility for such a simple system is weird.

Cooking performance was fine initially but they all broke eventually. But those damn clips failed 100% of them time. Literally every single one broke.

Seems dumb to me. You designed a product with a huge flaw: it's an appliance that comes with features you couldn't afford to keep running through the plausible life of the device. I've got a toaster made in the 1950s that works the same as the day my grandfather bought it. Compare that to my Anova which couldn't make it 10 years before stuff just stopped working.

Anova don’t realise that people expect things to work in the kitchen longer than in the living room or office.

I did manage to get a few people on board with sous vide and they chose Annova to save $100. Plus having a physical interface was a great selling point.

Kind of frustrating that a device functions just fine but the company doesn’t want to keep maintaining the software to keep all the features working.

If anything, this development should be an indication to my fellow cooks that a sous vide isn't an appliance that ever needed to be a "smart device" in the first place. Temperature control and a timer. That's all you need.

This is just dumb… when I bought my Anova product it did not say it would lose a core function, yes core I bought the more expensive Wi-Fi version, after 10 years. You sell a literal niche product and then turn off a function you sold people on. Then you offer a discount to buy a new product with that functionality?
Complaint
r/sousvide40Jul 2024
It's a functionality that people paid for though.

And the other is a precision cooker that retains 95% of its functionality without wifi. I’ve never even set up the wifi on my cooker.

Sidebar: the new machines consistently make a loud, high-pitched whine that tons of us here complain about. Are you guys going to do anything about it, or are all your engineers just suffering hearing loss in their 50s?

If it wasn’t a cash grab they 1) would not be doing this to kill off devices that work perfectly fine 2) would have sent a better offer than 50% off for 13 days. They are going to lose so many loyal customers. Why would any sane person buy another Anova when clearly they will just do this again in a few years?

I think it’s cool that Annova made a tech product that lasted over a decade, the company is still afloat, and able to offer a replacement device for (iirc) less than the retail cost of the original it’s replacing. That’s pretty stand-up, compared to some other mfrs.

To anyone who wants to keep their OG device - [Sous Vide °C](https://apps.apple.com/app/id419217101) is a better app and works with the OG Anova. I deleted the Anova app within weeks of discovering how bad it was.

Just the fact that a *kitchen appliance* is being equated to being "a service" whose functionality can be diminished on a whim is an absurdity on its face. It heats water, it keeps time and the core function of the app the end user *needs* is to turn the thing on and off, set & telegraph temperature and time elapsed.

✅ What Works

  • The core cooking function is consistently praised as reliable — "it works perfectly," with one owner noting their original Anova has been "a champ" for years of regular use.
  • Physical, on-device controls are called out as a real advantage: multiple mentions favor being able to set time and temperature directly on the unit without depending on the app at all (2 mentions).
  • General satisfaction with day-to-day cooking results shows up unprompted, with owners saying they simply like the product.
  • Build durability held up as a strength relative to app-dependent competitors — one comparison notes the unit stays "perfectly functional" even if a competitor's app-tied device would become a paperweight.

⚠️ Worth Knowing

  • The most upvoted complaint (549 upvotes) is about app bloat — ads and recipe suggestions added over time that a longtime owner says have made the app steadily worse than the original.
  • Plans to end Bluetooth and legacy app support drew direct planned-obsolescence accusations, with one reviewer calling the move a "cashgrab" and others flagging backwards-compatibility loss as a broken promise.
  • Several mentions frame the replacement or upgrade path offered for affected units as inadequate given how long owners expected support to last.
  • The paid subscription tier ($1.99/mo or $9.99/yr) for recipes and cook history adds an ongoing cost some reviewers see as unnecessary bloat layered on top of a device that already works without it.
ClearPick Verdict

**Owners report the circulator itself holds up well** — units running for years without failure and cooks described as working perfectly bath after bath. But the recurring thread on r/sousvide isn't about the hardware, it's about Anova's software and support decisions: mentions raised app bloat (ads, recipe upsells crowding out the simple time/temp screen) and, more seriously, plans to drop Bluetooth and app support on earlier units, which owners read as a trust breach rather than a minor inconvenience. The tension here is real — the cooker that still works fine physically can lose remote functionality by company decision, not device failure, and several reviewers called the move a cashgrab with an inadequate replacement offer. Owners who value physical button control over app connectivity say they've barely touched the app in years and won't be affected; buyers who actually rely on WiFi scheduling and the subscription recipe features should **weigh Anova's discontinuation track record before buying in, since long-term software support here is the recurring point of doubt, not the sous vide performance.**
