Honestly I didn't say this before but my biggest downside with the A50 is that dumb base station it's tied to. Just strips any notion of portability right out of it. Hell, your phone even bluetooth connects to the base and not the headset, which is a design choice I am incapable of understanding. I stuck with it because it's very good sound made the drawback worth it, but if I like the Maxwell 2 then I won't miss the A50.

This is my go to. Atmos on, set to Game mode with performance mode on. StealthZ EQ's (bounce back and forth from his general media one, and his footstep focused one). I also rock his StealthZ WC ear pads.

Love mine, I have the Gen 5 version, and it has excellent clean audio, fantastic mic, battery life and obviously the charging dock is a huge win for storing the headset neatly away while it tops its battery up.

Cause the pass through can be a nightmare at times especially for those using more than one platform and a TV instead of a monitor ... .

I upgraded from a gen 4 to a gen 5. Id say its worth it. The clamping force of the gen 5 is just a tiny bit more than the gen 4 but not much. Sound is much better on the gen 5 as well. The new graphene drivers make a difference

It makes the headset feel weightless, as if it's not even on your head. I can wear that style headset for hours, where any other headset sort of bothers me within minutes.

Still lots of weird random technical issues, but in Tarkov on competitive sound EQ mode I consistently hear things my teammates don't hear. ... For some reason they messed with the Gen4 pads. I found the Gen5 pads way too small and hot. I slapped my Gen4 pads on (my Gen4 dying was the reason for the upgrade) and I'm extremely happy. Nothing beats it on comfort. ... It's like a fancy car - you need to accept it being a little finicky, but for incredible performance.

The Astro A50 gen 5 is absolutely fine especially for the black Friday price! Can be used on every platform, Bluetooth and wireless is simultaneously etc. Absolutely banger microphone, sounds great, and can be eq'd via phone as well if needed!

Literally just picked up a pair and have been very happy so far. Lot more comfortable than I was expecting.

Honestly they have been awesome but to be fair you have to use the EQ adjustments in the software to really fine tune them for your liking. You can even set specific audio profiles for specific games.

โœ… What Works

  • The A50 Gen 5 base station is what separates this headset from every other wireless option. It charges the headset inductively when placed on the dock, automatically mutes the microphone when you set it down, and acts as a DAC/amp for improved audio quality โ€” all without any cables attached to the headset itself. The dock-to-play workflow is seamless in a way that no USB dongle setup can match.
  • Sound quality is flagship-tier. The 40mm neodymium drivers deliver wide soundstage with clear separation between lows, mids, and highs. Dolby Atmos and DTS Headphone:X surround processing add genuine directional audio for competitive games, and the ASTRO Command Center app provides parametric EQ for those who want to tune the sound signature precisely.
  • The Gen 5 supports simultaneous connection to multiple devices through the base station. You can have PS5 audio running through the headset while receiving chat from PC, or switch seamlessly between Xbox and PC without any re-pairing. For multi-platform households, this multi-input capability alone justifies a significant portion of the price premium.
  • Build quality has improved markedly from previous generations. The headband padding, over-ear cushions, and general material quality all feel appropriate for a $349 product. The flip-to-mute microphone design has a satisfying tactile click and is reliable โ€” the headset accurately detects mic position every time.

โš ๏ธ Worth Knowing

  • The A50 Gen 5 is a meaningful investment and the base station setup requires a desk or entertainment unit placement close to your gaming setup. If your gaming space is highly mobile or you game in multiple rooms, the base station dependency is a limitation rather than a feature. The headset can use a USB-C cable for wired operation if needed.
  • ASTRO Command Center software (PC/Mac) is required to access full EQ customization, firmware updates, and surround sound configuration. The software has historically had stability issues on some Windows configurations โ€” most users have no problems, but it is worth knowing that audio customization is software-gated.
  • Battery life is rated at 30 hours, which is competitive but not exceptional for 2024 โ€” the HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless reaches 300 hours at a lower price point. The A50's 30-hour life is perfectly fine for daily use given the dock charging workflow, but pure battery duration is not its strength.
  • The microphone quality is good for gaming communication but not broadcast-grade. If you stream or record content, you will likely want a dedicated microphone. The flip-to-mute design is convenient and the voice clarity in-game is excellent, but the capsule is not comparable to dedicated USB microphones.
ClearPick Verdict

The Astro A50 Gen 5 is the most refined dock-based wireless gaming headset on the market, and the base station workflow โ€” charge-while-docked, auto-mute, multi-input switching โ€” is genuinely hard to replicate elsewhere. Sound quality is excellent and multi-platform support is a real differentiator. The price is steep and the software dependency is real, but for serious multi-platform gamers who want the cleanest desk-to-play experience, it delivers on its premium positioning.
