Sometime around June of last year, a 6-cup Bialetti moka pot was purchased. I've done what I can to take good care of the insides: washing it practically immediately after the coffee was brewed, ensuring drying throughout all the parts, and occasionally using vinegar to clean it out. ... After a series of minutes go by, I'm trying to understand why no coffee is coming out, and why there is an odd burning smell in my kitchen. After turning off the moka pot and letting it cool down for a few minutes, I put gloves on and open it. The rubber is entirely shredded and melted! I did consider cleaning it, but the rubber is everywhere within the screws, practically sealed the grind basket shut, etc. I'm not sure what cadence the rubber is supposed to be replaced, but I clearly let it go too long.

I bought aftermarket silicone gaskets for my 9-cup Bialetti. They are much better, IMO.

i hate to break character, but i'm a barista and i am disappointed by the coffee at work way more often than i am from my moka pot. i feel like there's so much more room for error, and i never get that awful sour taste from the bialetti that you sometimes get on the real machines if any one part of the process is off this is genuinely my everyday setup, but i usually just get the free espresso at work to save money edit: to be clearer, this is genuinely the only setup i have at home, i'm not also sitting on a bambino or anything, this truly is my endgame

Regarding moka pots, you could give the Bialetti Brikka a try:[https://www.bialetti.com/it\_en/brikka-716.html?variant=2](https://www.bialetti.com/it_en/brikka-716.html?variant=2)The twist is an additional valve, that allows coffee extraction up to 5 bars resulting in a smoother and softer texture and taste. if you wanna go with a Bialetti, go with the Brikka ;) Since I am using the Brikka, my other three Bialettis are gathering dust..

This may seem like a blasphemous suggestion, but it honestly works fine for me.

-Aeropress filters also work with 6-cup Bialetti. -If you don't have a kettle don't worry, just heat the water in the container part until boiling and then carefully assemble the Moka together same way.

I replace gasket when it looks really bad, discolored and deformed, and begins to disintegrate. ... I use stainless bialetti btw.

My aluminum bialetti is going on 16 years now, and with daily use for 3-4 years, and semi-regular use otherwise is still perfect (other than rubber replacements, obviously).

Bialetti is a good choice for the mere fact that you can easily buy replacement parts. I warped the filter disk in my off brand moka pot and couldn’t find a replacement anywhere, so I just got a whole new (bialetti this time) pot

One caveat, if you have a Bialetti Brikka, which has an extra valve on top, you get a better extraction with cold water.

I have a 4-cup Bialetti Venus, and I generally make medium-light roasts.

yup, tried this for the first time last week. i will say though that this method usually leaves me with more foam on top that overall frothed milk. makes a nice mock cappuccino though!

Honestly the cost to benefit ratio for moka pots is hard to beat. Especially if you get the stainless steel Bialetti's and use an aeropress filter in the basket.

My go to at home has for the last 2 years been a Bialetti Venus moka pot. It’s low maintenance, it’s forgiving if the grind or the pack is off (yes, I pack the basket against mfr recommendations - hasn’t exploded yet), and it takes up minimal space. And if I kill it, it was like, $50, so big whoop. The brew while not quite espresso, does have some crema, is enjoyable black or as a cappuccino (my preference).

I love the Bialetti mostly for the look. Some of the ones in my collections are a bit crap. But since none of them are use daily, I can tolerate it.

Three years ago when I wrote that comment, you could buy gaskets direct from the Bialetti website. I don't see that as an option anymore. However, it does look like there is an official Bialetti Store on Amazon:

I just got a new 9 cup bialetti and the rubber is pretty loose to start. Enough that the filter plate can easily spin/ rattle around. Is that normal?

Bialetti recommends replacing the rubber seal yearly. But at least there is warning signs when th seal is worm out 😅 When storing the moka pot, ensure everything is dried out then when joining the two pieces back together don't screw it tight.

Upvote for this idea - its worked for me for years. Microwave the milk while the moka is brewing, put in the ikea wand (or an aerolatte if you feel like splurging) and foam the milk up. Its not quite as good as steam heated microfoamed film but it is close.

You could buy a Bialetti mukka instead of a normal moka, it brews the coffee and froths milk for a cappuccino.

✅ What Works

  • Long-term durability owners describe pots lasting well over a decade with normal use, provided the rubber gasket is replaced periodically (2 mentions)
  • Coffee quality and consistency praised as more reliable than fussier espresso machines, with one self-described barista calling their Moka Express their genuine everyday setup
  • Versatility beyond straight espresso, including milk frothing workarounds and AeroPress filter compatibility (3 mentions)
  • Low cost of ownership and simple maintenance once owners settle into a gasket-replacement routine, including aftermarket silicone gaskets rated as an upgrade

⚠️ Worth Knowing

  • The rubber gasket degrades over time and needs periodic replacement; one owner reported a shredded, melted seal and a burning kitchen smell after letting it go too long (130 upvotes)
  • Some buyers report loose or defective gaskets as a manufacturing inconsistency
  • A few longtime Bialetti users have switched to the pricier Brikka model for smoother, higher-pressure crema, leaving their Moka Express unused
  • Replacement gasket and parts availability comes up as something to plan for rather than assume
ClearPick Verdict

Owners **report years of daily use from a single aluminum pot**, with one Reddit thread describing 16 years of service aside from routine gasket swaps. The recurring theme across accounts is the rubber seal: most treat replacement as expected upkeep, but one buyer described a shredded, melted gasket and a burning smell in the kitchen after letting maintenance lapse too long. Beyond straight espresso, users report stretching the Moka Express into milk-frothing and AeroPress-filter workarounds, and several comparisons favor its coffee consistency over machine espresso gone wrong. Some Bialetti loyalists have since moved to the pricier Brikka for smoother crema and let their Moka Express gather dust, which points to this model suiting buyers who **want an inexpensive, repairable daily brewer** and don't mind replacing a gasket now and then, rather than anyone chasing café-style pressure and crema.
