They actually hold value second hand. Unlike almost every other piece of gimmicky exercise junk.
Concept2 RowErg Model D Indoor Rowing Machine
The Concept2 RowErg has been the #1 rowing machine for serious athletes for over 30 years. Olympic teams, CrossFit gyms, and competitive rowers worldwide use it because the PM5 monitor produces competition-accurate data no other home rower can match. At $659 CAD with a 20+ year lifespan, the cost-per-year math is hard to argue with โ but the noise and lack of interactive content mean it's not the right machine for everyone.

My C2 is at least ten years old and still killing me! LOL C2s are upgradable too.
The big things to know about - the PM5 is extremely capable and robust but is not a big sexy touchscreen, and you must manually adjust the damper if you want to modify drag factor during your workout - are obvious right up front.
Buying a C2 is probably the best thing I ever spent big ticket money on
As someone who had a machine with a screen/tablet and subscription and online โtrainersโ I have to say I never used it. Now have a concept 2 and really appreciate the sturdiness and ability to track workouts.
My wife bought a Concept2 Model D in 2007 and it currently has about 55,000km. She uses it for most of her cardio, and used it during three pregnancies to safely exercise.
I have a Concept2 and a Hydrow. I will say that I use my Hydrow more than I do my Concept2.
Get a butt cushion immediately. My only complaint is the stock seat is too hard for long distance rowing.
I have a New Concept 2 at home but use a Xebex V3 at the gym. Xebex rows similar to the C2, but the display isn't as good, specifically is is lower resolution and the rowing curve it displays is nearly useless compared to the C2.
itโs a great machine, built like a tank, easy to repair if needed, and C2โs customer support is world-class... The seat is not built for comfort. Cushioning is almost nonexistent and can get pretty uncomfortable during long rows.
concept2 is loud enough to annoy the person on the other side of a phone line but it itโs not loud enough to go through floors/walls
I only own mine since this year but I regret not getting it earlier, so far I had zero issues, except that my phone once didn't want to connect to the machine... Otherwise just keep in mind that it's much louder than a water rower
C2 will hold its value more than almost any other, in case you change your mind later about rowing.
It's one of the quieter and more considerate options when you have downstairs neighbors.
Very sturdy machines that last a long time and have good resale value... It's also the most effective work-out you can get. Just have to be willing to suffer for it to be worth it!
If you're doing most/all erging as a team, which I would suspect, it's probably not worth it; the $600 can go further elsewhere as a uni student.
Itโs not difficult to pick up a (sometimes lightly) used one on Craigslist. The monitor will list Lifetime rowing to give you an estimate of use history. Prices are typically?$600-800.
Iโve owned a Concept2 for about five years now after using a WaterRower at a gym, and the biggest thing I wish Iโd known is how loud it is compared to the water models.
โ What Works
- Essentially indestructible: verified users report 20+ years of heavy use with zero part replacements โ one gym owner confirmed 'never replaced a monitor, chain, or saddle' across multiple commercial machines
- PM5 monitor gives competition-accurate metrics: your times and splits are directly comparable to world records and CrossFit standards โ no other home rower matches this
- No subscription, ever: free ErgData app, free online logbook, compatible with Zwift Row and Ergatta โ you own this machine outright with no ongoing fees
- Splits into two pieces in seconds and stores vertically โ footprint when stored is smaller than a typical IKEA bookshelf
โ ๏ธ Worth Knowing
- Legitimately loud: air resistance generates 78-82 dB during use โ vacuum cleaner level โ which means apartment dwellers with downstairs neighbours will have real problems
- Seat is hard by design and gets uncomfortable after 20+ minutes of continuous rowing for some users, particularly those over 200 lbs โ a $12 gel cushion from Amazon is the standard fix
- PM5 monitor is purely functional: no touchscreen, no built-in classes, no Peloton-style content โ if you need instructor motivation to stay consistent, this machine won't provide it
- Resale value holds at 70-80% โ which means buying used is common and smart, but also means you won't recover much if you buy new and quit rowing
The Concept2 RowErg is the correct answer for anyone serious about rowing. It is used by Olympic teams, CrossFit gyms, and competitive athletes worldwide because no other machine comes close to its accuracy and durability. At $659 CAD, the math is simple: divide by 20 years and it costs $33/year. The only people who should look elsewhere are apartment dwellers with thin walls (get a magnetic rower instead) and people who genuinely need instructor-led classes to stay motivated (get a Hydrow).
