As we all know, the Sennheiser HD600 is one of the most recognized and recommended headphones of all time, for many good reasons. Comfort, build quality and brand recognition, for example. When it comes to sound, the midrange is extremely natural, vocals sound incredible and treble is subdued and harmless even for people sensitive to it.

I actually didn't like to use my HD 600 in the past 2 months, because my ears were touching the foam inside the ear cup.

Those pads are suffering.

It goes to show that 3rd party sellers are always a risky gamble in that it can be non-official inventory not sold from us. We recommend to always buy through authorized resellers.

I can say for certain that the drivers were definitely different! Not only in terms of sound, but also in sensitivity. When running them through my topping DX3 Pro+, the fake pair ran on similar level with my HD 560s (which are already easy to drive headphones).

You should also look at Voskhod 6J1P-EV. They have a more warm, classic tube signature. The GE JAN 5654W I find to be clearer.

They mean: your headphone stand is crushing your pads, they flatten out with use as the sound changes for the worse. By leaving them either on your head or the stand theyโ€™re constantly compressed, drastically reducing the lifespan of the pads, get a stand where they hang or lay them flat, hd 600 pads donโ€™t last a long time anyway

Important reminder not to keep any of these headphones on a stand that compresses the padding, also (earpads or headband).

Finally I managed to have an hd600 and a tube amp, even though it is not the most expensive amp. With the original tubes of the Xduoo mt-602 (6j1) the differences for the Fiio k5 Pro (left in the photo) are not very pronounced. I already bought other tubes (5654w) and I am waiting arrive to see if i can get a properly tube sound. I'm getting close to my end game!

I still personally prefer the HD 600, even though the bass extension is better on the HD 660S2. Thereโ€™s that dip in the presence region that I donโ€™t exactly love, but thatโ€™s without EQ of course, so I can fix that rather easily.

I picked a pair as my DT 990 pros where falling apart I understand now why old mate senny is the bench mark.

When it comes time definitely give the ZMF perforated suede pads a try. Makes the 600s sound even better.

Since working from.homenim wearing mine like 8hours a day + a bit of gaming I'm the evening. Might be why my pads are looking a tad thin after a year...

โœ… What Works

  • Midrange and vocal reproduction are repeatedly singled out as natural and benchmark-level, with treble described as smooth even for treble-sensitive listeners
  • Long-standing recognition as one of the most recommended reference headphones, cited alongside comfort and build quality
  • Buyers who upgraded from other models or paired it with a tube amp report high satisfaction with the resulting sound

โš ๏ธ Worth Knowing

  • Stock ear pads are reported to compress or degrade when the headphones are stored on a stand, and to wear out under 8+ hours of daily use, prompting some owners to switch to aftermarket pads
  • At least one buyer found the foam liner inside the ear cup uncomfortable enough to avoid using the headphones for two months
  • Counterfeit units circulate through third-party sellers; affected buyers reported drivers with noticeably different sound and sensitivity from a genuine pair, so purchasing from an authorized reseller is recommended
  • Getting the most out of the HD 600 reportedly benefits from a dedicated headphone amp or tube amp pairing rather than driving it straight from a phone or laptop
ClearPick Verdict

Reviewers describe the HD 600's midrange and vocal reproduction as **an industry benchmark**, with one widely-upvoted review calling the sound 'extremely natural' and its treble 'harmless even for people sensitive to it.' But the recurring complaint pattern is physical, not sonic: buyers report pad compression damage from stand storage, ear pads touching the foam liner during extended sessions, and pads wearing out under heavy daily use. A separate thread involves counterfeit units sold through third-party sellers, with one buyer noting the fake pair's drivers ran noticeably less sensitive than the genuine model. These read as maintenance and sourcing headaches rather than failures of the headphone's core sound, but they surface often enough in feedback to weigh against the reputation. **Listeners buying from an authorized retailer and prepared to budget for eventual pad replacement get the reference-grade sound the HD 600 is known for; anyone shopping the cheapest third-party listing should be wary.**
