this happened to my ULT WEAR also, but Sony replaced it for free since it was a common problem with the ULT WEARs
Sony ULT WEAR
The Sony ULT WEAR is Sony's bass-first answer to headphone listeners who want deep, physical impact in their music โ an ULT button adds extra low-end punch on demand, layered on top of Sony's already excellent ANC and 30-hour battery. If you love hip-hop, EDM, or any genre where the bass needs to be felt, the ULT WEAR is the Sony pick in Canada.

I'm using ULT WEAR myself and never experienced anything unusual. I will say that it depends on your handling of it.
The ULT feels a bit bulkier with the larger bass subs along with its own updated size adjustment railing system. Though personally I find the ULT more comfortable in my ears than the thinner XM5, yet it is about the same size and comfort as the XM4. The ANC is slightly better in the XM4/5 than the ULT, but the ULT is not too far behind and still does a much better job than the CH720N.
it's only muddy if you leave the EQ stock โ and why would anyone do that with a headphone in this price range? ... My only negative comment on the ULT would be its silly looking large size (which doesn't really matter if your purchase it for functionality).
It is so stupid that they use plastic on most vulnerable parts of the headphones.
i am gonna be honest, tried both of them in jb hifi and bought sony ult wear, xm4s sure they sounded a bit open but not much different, if ur not an audiophile with a bit of eq tweak u wouldnt even notice any difference, and boy lemme tell u this motha trucker(sony ult wears) have some really powerful bass with ult 2 turned on, just re watched godzilla king of the monsters movie tonight and it was hell of an experience ( even better than cinema) u can actually feel the bass and vibration flowing through ur body when the action happens
I currently have them, and their anc is really good. with some eq these sound amazing as well.
i watched in one of the reviews that if you use the ULTs wired, they kinda delivered even more punchy bass and better mids, and obviously minus the latency. so if youre gonna use them for gaming i say go for it.
I've just changed from the Bose QC's (purchased in 2017) to the Sony ULT Wear and have to say, for the price difference the Sony's are a pretty damn good cheaper option. Long battery life, sound is great, the ULT function delivers bass if that's your thing.
To get straight to the point, these are OK, its like if the Sony XB series had a Redbull (not steroids) and had a little more energy, not dynamically different
went in with my gut and listened that this model will be worth it.. And it WAS! I enjoyed it more than my whch720n ... as a college student, this is perfect for me! Pricey, yes, but not too crazy.
You really have to play with the EQ a ton to get the right sound but I actually like the ULT Wears a lot.
I got mine back in October last year and my hinges are fine tbh.. I do not know how long you have to use the headphones for so that the hinge crack starts to show, so could be seconds from disaster
Literally just came back from a run. They get kinda warm, but not really much warmer than other headsets I've tried. I get real sweaty and try to wipe them down after every workout, but I've had no issues with mine thus far.
โ What Works
- ULT button triggers a dedicated bass boost mode that physically increases low-frequency response โ noticeably more impactful bass than the XM4 or XM5 for listeners who prioritize bass-heavy genres
- IP55 water and dust resistance makes it the most weather-proof Sony over-ear headphone โ meaningful for Canadian outdoor use, gym sessions, and unpredictable spring and fall weather
- 30-hour battery at base settings with multipoint Bluetooth handles a full Canadian workweek without charging for moderate daily users
- Lighter than the XM5 with a simpler design built for active use rather than premium travel
โ ๏ธ Worth Knowing
- ANC performance trails the XM4 and XM5 โ the ULT Wear prioritizes bass and durability over noise cancellation, so commuters who need maximum isolation should look at the XM series
- Sound signature is bass-heavy by design โ listeners who prefer neutral or balanced sound will find the ULT tuning overwhelming even without the ULT button
- Better for gym and outdoor use than office or transit use โ the IP55 rating and bass-forward tuning position it as an active headphone more than a commuter model
The Sony ULT WEAR is Sony's answer for Canadian listeners who want bass-forward sound with the durability to match an active lifestyle. The IP55 rating makes it the rare over-ear headphone that handles sweat and rain without worry, and the ULT bass boost is genuinely fun on hip-hop, EDM, and bass-heavy playlists. If you want Sony build quality with a party sound signature and actual weather resistance, this is the one.
