I think 85$ is an excellent price, I bought mine a few years back on black friday for 99$ and it's being used almost daily. Right now many online dealers like Sur la table and Williams sonoma are offering the 4qt for 99 with free shipping and you even got a better deal!
I have the 7 and bought an it primarily for bulk cooking pasta sauces, stews, curries. It's great. I'm a pretty average female and find it heavy but manageable when full of food. It also just fits in the sink to be cleaned
Round fits on a burner better. More even heat. Sometimes a 7 seems a little cramped. But a 9 might be too expensive to justify, and harder to wash. So I'm real happy with the Staub 7qt round.
I use the staub 1.5 qt, Petite French Oven to cook rice multiple times a week. Love it.
I have a deep teal sauteuse and use it all the time. Not sure exactly how much bigger you want but the 6.75 wide round is a fantastic piece - all the floor space you could want and ample volume. Can substitute for the 3.5 and 5 qt braisers as well.
I mean they normally retail $150 or above so if you can afford it go for it! I have the same one (but red) and i use it all the time. Great size, not too small and not to large. Use it for everything.
โ What Works
- Exceptional value versus standard $150+ retail pricing
- Handles diverse cooking โ sauces, stews, braises, curries, and rice
- Black interior cleans significantly easier than color variants
- Good burner fit and even heat distribution
โ ๏ธ Worth Knowing
- Heavy when full โ manageable but noticeable
- Requires adequate storage space and oven room
Owners consistently praise the Staub 5.5-qt cocotte as exceptional value compared to typical $150+ retail prices. It handles a range of stovetop and oven cooking โ from pasta sauces and stews to curries and rice โ and the black enamel interior cleans noticeably easier than colored variants. The round shape fits burners well and distributes heat evenly; the size avoids feeling cramped or unnecessarily large. One tradeoff: it's heavy when full, though owners note it remains manageable for most users. Buy this if you want a versatile, durable workhorse Dutch oven at a genuine discount; avoid if you prioritize lightweight cookware or have limited storage space.
