If you want to compare your times to other rowers, you will need an C2. Otherwise, the WR is just fine. It will last for many, many years and spare parts are readily available. Form is what will prevent injuries, not a couple of centimetres on the footboard.

You have no plans of ever competing or rowing to compare yourself to club mates or anyone else? You just want to get a bit fitter and want a machine that doesn't blow down your walls? Go for the waterrower, man. The C2 or nothing approach is some elitist bullshit. If you only care about fitness you don't need it. You do you!

I have been using the WR for over 16 years with no issues. I am a cyclist and the WR compliments my training routine. The WR is a well-built machine and it looks beautiful. Now that I added the Ergatta attachment, workouts are more fun. I am glad that I got a WR.

I had a water rower. It is very pretty, and quiet. But... the foot position hurt MY knees. With C2 I rarely have knee issues. Every time I row the C2 in the living room, my wife wishes it was a WR...

Obviously, we all have different needs, and it's perfectly OK if the OP has different needs than you. in my book, the C2 doesn't "win every other category". In addition to aesthetics, the WR is quieter. Storage is a push at best. Yes the C2 will last forever, but many Waterrowers last a long time as well, and parts and maintenance are relatively simple.

To decide, I would watch a video of proper form and then try them out in the store. See which one helps you get better form if injuries are your big concern ... I noticed the flat rail of the WR put more pressure on my lower back, but less on my knees.

I've heard that C2s are good for training, setting, and meeting goals, but for an overall better experience without rigorous training goals water rowers are probably a better option

Check out the SmartRow add-on. It really gives you info on every stroke. WR with SR is something one should have than WR alone.

✅ What Works

  • Exceptionally durable and long-lasting (owners report 16+ years of reliable use)
  • Nearly silent operation with natural water resistance
  • Handcrafted design and wood construction add beauty to any room
  • Spare parts and maintenance support readily available
  • Ideal for casual fitness without competitive rowing goals

⚠️ Worth Knowing

  • Foot platform ergonomics may cause knee or lower back pain for some users
  • Not suitable for competitive rowing or time comparisons (Concept2 C2 better for that)
  • Higher price point ($2,145+) reflects premium positioning
ClearPick Verdict

The WaterRower Natural earns consistent praise for exceptional durability—owners report 16+ year lifespans with minimal issues—and for its serene, quiet operation and beautiful handcrafted design. Spare parts are readily available and maintenance is straightforward. However, the pedal/foot platform ergonomics present a real trade-off: some users report knee pain or lower back pressure, though others find it less problematic than competitive rowers. This is best suited for casual fitness goals and recreational rowing; buyers prioritizing competitive metrics or concerned about knee issues should audition in-store or consider a Concept2. For aesthetics-conscious home exercisers, the water-rower experience delivers.
