✅ What Works

  • At 5.3 inches front-to-back and 2.0 lbs, the DCF787 is one of the most compact 20V MAX impact drivers DEWALT makes. The reduced length fits into tight spots — inside cabinet frames, between joists, and in cramped mechanical rooms — where a standard-length impact driver would wedge against an obstruction before the bit contacts the fastener.
  • 1,650 in-lbs of max torque handles deck screws, structural lag bolts up to 3/8-inch, and fastening through multiple layers of material without bogging. At this torque rating you will strip a screw head before you'll overload the tool, so consistent depth control comes from technique and clutch use rather than power limitation.
  • Variable speed trigger combined with 2,800 RPM and 3,400 IPM gives useful dynamic range — you can ease into a fastener at low speed for positioning, then accelerate into high speed for driving. The three LED brightness modes (off, low, medium) illuminate a work area rather than casting a hot spot, which reduces glare in enclosed spaces.
  • The 20V MAX 1.3Ah battery included is small but the platform compatibility is the value — this same battery works across all DEWALT 20V MAX tools. Upgrading to a 2.0Ah or 5.0Ah battery triples or quintuples runtime without any other changes.

⚠️ Worth Knowing

  • The 1.3Ah battery included with the kit is genuinely small — roughly 20-30 minutes of intermittent fastening before recharge. Consider this a starter battery that gets you working immediately, not the battery you'll use on real projects. A 20V MAX 2.0Ah or 4.0Ah battery ($35–$60 CAD) is the realistic companion for full-day use.
  • Impact drivers use a hexagonal 1/4-inch chuck — they accept 1/4-inch hex shank bits only. Standard round-shank drill bits require a 1/4-inch hex adapter. If your primary need is drilling holes (not driving fasteners), a drill/driver with a standard chuck is more practical; the DCF787 excels at screwdriving, not drilling.
  • Like all impact drivers, this tool is loud — around 85 dB at the operator's ear during impact cycles. Hearing protection is recommended for extended use. The impacts also transmit noticeable vibration to the wrist and forearm, which becomes relevant for anyone with hand or wrist conditions.
  • The 3-LED lights are located behind the chuck, which can cast the shadow of the chuck body onto the fastener. For precision work in dark spaces, repositioning the light angle by rotating the tool slightly is more effective than relying on the LEDs directly.

What Real Buyers Are Saying

What buyers love

"This fit in a spot in my boat engine bay where nothing else would. Drove lag bolts in 6 inches of clearance. That alone was worth the price."

"I'm a cabinet installer. Small, light, enough torque. That's all I need. This one checks all three boxes and doesn't cost contractor-tool money."

Source: Reddit

"Compared three impact drivers in this price range. DEWALT won on the platform — the batteries I own for my circular saw work here. No contest."

Source: Amazon reviewer

"Used this to build a pergola — hundreds of deck screws. Never once jammed or bogged. My wrist was tired before the tool was."

Common complaints

1.3Ah battery runs out quickly…

The battery that comes with it is basically a demo battery. It's dead after 30 screws if you're driving anything substantial. Budget for a real battery the day you buy this.

Loud during impact cycles…

Impact drivers are loud by design, and this one is no exception. Working indoors in a finished space it was echoing off the walls. Wear hearing protection — seriously.

Hex chuck only — no round shanks…

Tried to use a standard drill bit and it won't fit. You need a hex adapter. I wish this was more prominently explained when buying a kit like this.

LED shadow from chuck body…

The lights are on the wrong side of the chuck — the chuck itself casts a shadow directly on the screw head. Rotate the tool a bit and you get light, but it's awkward.

ClearPick Verdict

The DCF787C1 is the right standalone impact driver buy for anyone who wants DEWALT's most compact 20V MAX tool with a complete kit (battery + charger) included. The 5.3-inch body and 2-lb weight make it the go-to for tight spaces, and 1,650 in-lbs is more torque than almost any homeowner project needs. The 1.3Ah battery is the honest weak link — treat it as a starter and plan to add a larger battery shortly after purchase.
