The fully automated cleaning cycle fires 30 minutes after each use, rotating the globe to sift waste into the sealed drawer below. Most owners report near-zero manual scooping — the unit handles everything, and the sealed waste drawer contains odor far better than an open box with a lid.
The OdorTrap system with activated carbon filter is the most effective smell management in any automatic litter box. Multi-cat households that previously battled litter odor report a dramatic improvement, with guests often unable to detect a litter box is present at all.
The WhiskerApp provides granular usage data — visit counts, weight trends, and cycle history for each cat. Over time this becomes a genuine health monitoring tool: deviations from normal patterns have alerted owners to urinary issues and kidney disease before symptoms appeared.
Build quality is in a different league from budget self-cleaning boxes. The globe mechanism is robust and quiet, the drawer seals tightly, and Litter-Robot's customer support and warranty are consistently praised. Units bought in 2016 still run for owners in 2026.
⚠️ Worth Knowing
The $699 CAD entry price is steep — nearly 10× a basic litter box. The cost calculation shifts if you have multiple cats, hate scooping, or travel frequently, but buyers expecting to feel good about the price immediately are often surprised by sticker shock at checkout.
Some cats refuse to use the globe-shaped enclosure entirely, particularly older cats set in their ways or cats who dislike the enclosed space. Litter-Robot offers a trial period, but if your cat rejects the form factor there's no easy fix.
Clumping litter is non-negotiable — crystal, non-clumping clay, and pine pellets won't work with the sifting mechanism. If your cat is already on a non-clumping litter, switching litter types alongside introducing a new box can cause further transition resistance.
The waste drawer needs emptying every 7–10 days for a single cat, more often with multiple cats. The replacement carbon filters and waste drawer liners are a recurring cost — budget roughly $5–8/month CAD for consumables.
What Real Buyers Are Saying
What buyers love
"I have three cats and this has completely changed my life. I scooped litter every single day for years. Now I empty a drawer once a week and that's it. Worth every penny."

"The health monitoring caught my cat's kidney disease early. His visit frequency spiked and the app flagged it. The vet confirmed an issue. I credit this machine with probably adding years to his life."

"My husband refused to get it at $700. One month in he admitted it was the best purchase we've made for our cats. No smell, no scooping, no mess."

"I've had mine for four years and it's never missed a cleaning. The build quality is genuinely excellent for a product with moving parts that runs multiple times a day."

Common complaints
My cat refused to use it for two weeks…
My cat refused to use it for two weeks — she'd sniff it and walk away. I had to put treats inside every day and remove her old box entirely before she finally committed. Worth it now, but the transition was stressful.

Expensive and the consumables add up…
The drawer liners and filters aren't optional and they cost real money. After a year the total cost is way more than the $700 purchase price. I love the unit but I wasn't prepared for the ongoing expense.

Had a motor issue after 14 months…
The globe stopped rotating after 14 months — just past the warranty. Litter-Robot support was helpful and sold me a replacement motor at cost, but having to repair a $700 appliance in year two wasn't what I expected.

Takes up a lot of space…
It's much larger than I expected. With the cover on it's almost 30 inches tall and nearly 2 feet wide. In my apartment bathroom there was no way to fit it — I had to put it in the bedroom which is less than ideal.

ClearPick Verdict
The Litter-Robot 4 is the best automatic litter box you can buy — the automation is genuinely reliable, the odor control is exceptional, and the app health-monitoring is a real bonus for attentive cat owners. The $699 CAD price is hard to swallow, and the unit only makes sense if you have cats that will accept an enclosed globe and you're committed to clumping litter. For multi-cat households that hate scooping, there is no better option at any price.
