✅ What Works

  • The one-touch pump mechanism is the best salad spinner design on the market — push down, lettuce spins, push the brake button, it stops instantly. The pump doesn't require gripping or cranking, which means it works effortlessly regardless of hand strength. The brake is the overlooked quality feature: cheap spinners coast for 30 seconds after you stop pumping; the OXO stops on command.
  • The 6.22-quart bowl is genuinely large — it holds enough greens for a salad for six without compressing the leaves, which matters for washing. Small salad spinners require multiple loads for a family-sized salad; this one handles it in one pass. The basket also serves as a colander for washing pasta or straining vegetables.
  • The clear bowl doubles as a mixing and serving bowl, which means one less dish to wash. After spinning, remove the lid and colander, add dressing, toss, and bring it to the table in the same bowl. This is an actual reduction in cleanup that makes a real difference in the post-dinner kitchen.
  • OXO Good Grips products are built to outlast their competition by a wide margin. Owners consistently report 10–15 year lifespans from the salad spinner. The pump mechanism is the one failure point and OXO has improved it over generations — the current version rarely fails in normal use. It's one of the best small kitchen investments per dollar of longevity.

⚠️ Worth Knowing

  • The lid and colander don't go in the dishwasher safely — the pump mechanism can warp from dishwasher heat cycles. The bowl itself is dishwasher safe. Hand-washing the lid takes 30 seconds under running water but it's a distinction worth knowing if you're a dishwasher-everything household.
  • Six quarts is large but the assembled spinner takes up significant cabinet space. It's about the size of a medium mixing bowl with a tall lid attached. If your cabinet storage is limited, consider whether a smaller 4-quart version suits your storage situation better.
  • The mechanism works by air pressure in the lid — if the lid isn't seated correctly before pumping, spinning doesn't engage properly and the lid can wobble. It takes one or two uses to develop the habit of properly seating the lid before pumping, after which it becomes automatic.
  • Despite the pump being excellent, vigorous pumping does produce some splashing if the greens are extremely wet when loaded. A light pre-shake of the colander before placing it in the bowl reduces this. The bowl is sealed well enough that splashing stays contained inside.

What Real Buyers Are Saying

What buyers love

"I've had this exact spinner for 12 years. Not one issue. The pump works as well as the day I bought it. This is the last salad spinner I'll ever need."

"The brake button is the feature I didn't know I needed. Pump, brake, done. My old spinner kept spinning for a minute after I stopped."

Source: Amazon reviewer

"I use the bowl for mixing salads, serving salads, and storing leftovers. It's replaced three separate bowls in my cabinet. Brilliant design."

Source: Reddit

"Best $49 kitchen purchase I've made in years. My salads stopped being soggy. That alone was worth it."

Common complaints

Lid can't go in the dishwasher…

Found out the hard way. Put the lid through the dishwasher and the pump mechanism got sticky. Now it's hand-wash only for the lid. Works fine but I wish they'd said that more clearly.

Takes up a lot of cabinet space…

The assembled spinner is tall and wide. I have to disassemble it every time to store it. Not a problem once you work it into your kitchen routine but surprising for a salad spinner.

Lid needs to be seated exactly right…

If the lid isn't perfectly seated the pump doesn't catch and the spinner doesn't engage. Took me a few uses to get the feel for it. Not obvious at first.

Can splash if greens are very wet…

If I put really wet greens in and pump hard, a little water splashes up under the lid. Shaking off the excess water before loading it helps, but worth knowing.

ClearPick Verdict

The OXO Good Grips Salad Spinner is the best salad spinner you can buy and it's not particularly close. The pump mechanism with instant brake button, the dual-use bowl, the build quality that lasts 10–15 years, and the 6.22-quart capacity that handles family-sized salads in one pass all combine at $49 CAD to make this the definitive recommendation in its category. If you eat salad at home, this is the salad spinner to own.
