✅ What Works

  • 2.5K resolution at $39 CAD is extraordinary — most security cameras at this price offer 1080p, and several charge $100+ for QHD. The Wyze Cam v4's 2560×1440p image is noticeably sharper for identifying faces, license plates, and package details in playback.
  • A 32GB microSD card is included in the box, enabling continuous local recording with no subscription required. Most competitors at this price don't include the card — and many don't even have a microSD slot. With the included card and continuous recording enabled, you get days of 24/7 footage without spending a cent more.
  • 5GHz Wi-Fi support is a meaningful upgrade over the v3 and most competing cameras — a 5GHz connection delivers faster live view loading and more stable streaming in environments with congested 2.4GHz networks. It's the first Wyze camera to include dual-band support.
  • Color night vision in well-lit areas (porch lights, street lamps) delivers color detail that infrared-only cameras miss. During daylight hours, the wide 130° field of view captures more of an entryway or backyard than most competing cameras.

⚠️ Worth Knowing

  • Color night vision requires ambient light — in true darkness, the camera falls back to infrared black-and-white. The color night vision marketing can create inflated expectations; it's better described as enhanced-light color mode rather than true low-light color capability.
  • The free Wyze app includes 14 days of rolling event-triggered cloud clips, which is generous. Full 24/7 cloud recording requires Wyze Cam Unlimited at $5.99/month USD. The included microSD card covers 24/7 continuous recording locally without a subscription.
  • Wyze has faced data security incidents in the past — a 2019 data exposure and a 2024 incident where camera feeds were briefly visible to wrong users. The company responded with fixes and security improvements, but privacy-sensitive buyers should weigh this history.
  • The camera is wired (USB-A to USB-C) with no battery option — it needs to be within reach of a power source or use a long USB cable run. Outdoor installation typically requires a weatherproof USB cable or an outdoor-rated power strip.

What Real Buyers Are Saying

What buyers love

"2.5K at $39. I can read license plates on cars parked across my driveway. At this price it's borderline absurd."

"The included 32GB card means I'm not paying for a subscription and I have continuous recording. That was the dealbreaker feature for me."

Source: Reddit

"5GHz makes a real difference — my v3 cameras on 2.4GHz had lag and buffering. The v4 on 5GHz is smooth and fast to connect."

Source: Amazon reviewer

"I have six of these covering my entire property. Total cost was less than one premium camera. Coverage per dollar is unmatched."

Common complaints

Color night vision requires ambient light…

Marketed as color night vision but if there's no porch light nearby it just switches to black and white IR. Don't expect it to see color in complete darkness.

Past security incidents are a concern…

Wyze has had some notable security issues historically. The hardware is great but I'm hesitant to put it in a bedroom for that reason. Sticking to outdoor use.

Wired only — need power nearby…

My ideal mounting spot for the backyard doesn't have power within reach. Had to run a 20-foot USB cable. Wish there was a battery version of the v4.

5GHz connection can be unstable…

The 5GHz support is new and has had some firmware issues — I had a camera dropping to 2.4GHz constantly. Fixed in a later update but not before several weeks of frustration.

ClearPick Verdict

The Wyze Cam v4 is the most camera you can buy for $39 CAD — 2.5K video, 130° FOV, dual-band Wi-Fi, two-way audio, and a 32GB microSD card included. The limitations (wired power, ambient light required for color night vision, Wyze's security history) are real but shouldn't deter buyers who understand the trade-offs. For budget-first security coverage of entryways, driveways, and common areas, it's hard to beat.
