✅ What Works

  • Eleven amps and 11,000 RPM represent the top end of what 4.5-inch angle grinders offer. Under load — cutting through rebar, grinding weld seams, or stripping rust from structural steel — the DWE402 maintains speed where underpowered 6-amp budget grinders bog and stall. This consistency under load is what separates professional-grade tools from homeowner-grade tools at the same disc size.
  • The tool-free guard adjustment at 90° increments is a thoughtful design. Repositioning the guard between cutting, grinding, and sanding disc orientations takes seconds without reaching for a hex key. The one-touch spindle lock for disc changes similarly reduces tool swap time — critical when you're cycling between a cutting disc and a wire cup brush on the same job.
  • The three-position anti-vibration side handle gives flexibility for left-hand, right-hand, and overhead orientation. Angle grinders generate significant vibration during grinding and cutting, and the ability to position the handle at the angle that best absorbs vibration into your arm rather than your wrist reduces fatigue on extended use.
  • At $89 CAD, the DWE402 is competitively priced for an 11-amp corded grinder from a major professional brand. Comparable Milwaukee and Makita corded models run $110–$140 CAD. For buyers without a strong brand allegiance, DEWALT's build quality and service network make this the default recommendation.

⚠️ Worth Knowing

  • The DWE402 has no kickback brake (sometimes marketed as "electronic brake" or "anti-kickback protection"). If the disc binds suddenly — common when cutting thin metal or when the guard catches the material — the motor continues spinning. Users unfamiliar with angle grinder safety should understand and practice proper body positioning: never position yourself in the plane of the disc.
  • Angle grinders are among the most dangerous common shop tools. Disc breakage, kickback, and contact with the rotating disc cause serious injuries annually. Always wear a full face shield (not just safety glasses), hearing protection, and leather gloves. Never use a damaged or cracked disc, and always confirm the disc's rated RPM exceeds the tool's RPM before mounting.
  • The 6-foot cord is functional for stationary workbench use but limiting for mobile work like pipeline fitting or structural steel fabrication. An extension cord of 25 feet (minimum 12-gauge for 11-amp draws) is necessary for most job-site applications. Avoid 14-gauge extension cords — they cause voltage drop that stresses the motor under load.
  • The DWE402 does not include any discs — it ships with the guard and side handle only. Budget for a cutting disc assortment ($20–$30 CAD), a grinding disc ($8–$15 CAD), and a flap disc for finishing ($10–$15 CAD) depending on your applications.

What Real Buyers Are Saying

What buyers love

"I weld fabricate in my shop. This grinder does cleanup on MIG welds all day without complaint. Tried a $40 no-name before — it burned out in three months. This is three years old and going strong."

"Cutting rebar for a concrete foundation — 11 amps powered through 1/2-inch rebar cleanly and quickly. This is what a grinder is supposed to feel like."

Source: Reddit

"The 3-position side handle is something I undervalued until I used it overhead. Being able to rotate it 90 degrees for a ceiling cut made the whole job easier."

Source: Amazon reviewer

"Guard adjust without a tool is a real-time saver when you switch from a cut disc to a flap disc. I do it probably 10 times a job. Saved minutes add up."

Common complaints

No kickback brake is a genuine safety concern…

I bought this knowing it had no anti-kickback, but it's worth saying explicitly: if this grabs, the disc keeps spinning. Wear your PPE and stay out of the disc plane. No compromise.

6-ft cord runs short outdoors…

For anything outside my shop, 6 feet isn't close to enough. I keep a 25-foot 12-gauge extension coiled with the grinder. Buy one the same day you buy the tool.

Source: Amazon reviewer

No discs included in the box…

Arrived ready to use — except for the fact that there are no discs. Obvious in retrospect but I had to make a second trip to the hardware store. Factor in disc costs.

Vibration fatigues wrists on long sessions…

After 90 minutes of weld grinding, my hands were buzzing. Anti-vibration gloves help a lot. This is a tool category thing, not a DEWALT fault — all grinders vibrate.

ClearPick Verdict

The DEWALT DWE402 is the benchmark 4.5-inch corded angle grinder for tradespeople and serious shop users. At 11 amps and $89 CAD, it outperforms the sub-$50 imports on sustained load without the price premium of the Milwaukee or Makita equivalent. Safety awareness is non-negotiable with any angle grinder — budget for proper PPE along with the tool. Pair it with a 12-gauge extension cord and a disc assortment and you're fully equipped.
