✅ What Works

  • The TSTAK modular system's primary value is the reliable stacking mechanism. All TSTAK boxes, drawers, shelves, and power tool holders click together securely using the same proprietary connector at the top and bottom of each unit — meaning any TSTAK component you buy today is compatible with components you buy three years from now. This long-term ecosystem commitment is what separates TSTAK from generic stackable boxes.
  • The flat tote format — wide, shallow, with a deep lid — is specifically designed for power tools, routers, circular saws, and bulky accessories that don't fit in deep, narrow toolboxes. The full-width opening allows grabbing a tool without digging through layers. The deep lid creates a secondary compartment that holds manuals, accessories, or cords independently of the main bay.
  • Build quality on TSTAK units holds up to genuine job site abuse. The structural polypropylene withstands drops from truck beds, sits in the rain without warping, and handles temperature extremes from -20°C winter job sites to 40°C truck beds in summer without the latch distortion that afflicts lower-quality plastic boxes.
  • When stacked on the DEWALT DWST17807 rolling tower (sold separately), the TSTAK units become a mobile tool cart with a telescoping handle and integrated wheels. Multiple trades use this as a replacement for a traditional metal rolling chest — lighter, more mobile, and modular enough to split the system by job site.

⚠️ Worth Knowing

  • TSTAK is a DEWALT-proprietary format — it does not cross-stack with Milwaukee PACKOUT, Bosch L-BOXX, Ridgid Pro Gear, or other modular systems. Committing to TSTAK means committing to the DEWALT ecosystem for storage. If you own Milwaukee tools and already use PACKOUT, adding TSTAK creates a compatibility gap; stick with one system.
  • The single metal latch is functional but not padlockable without the optional TSTAK safety lock (DWST1-75664, sold separately). For job sites where theft is a concern, plan for the additional lock from the start. PACKOUT's integrated security features are ahead of TSTAK in this area.
  • The telescoping handle is a feature of the TSTAK system only when multiple units are stacked on the rolling tower. The flat tote itself has a fixed carry handle and does not roll independently. A single flat tote without additional components is just a box with a carry handle.
  • TSTAK units are not IP-rated — they're polypropylene boxes, not sealed cases. Rain during transport splashes into the latched compartment around the seam. For protection during sustained rain exposure, a tarp over the stack or a waterproof cover is needed. DEWALT's ToughSystem 2.0 line offers sealed storage for users needing weather protection.

What Real Buyers Are Saying

What buyers love

"I have 7 TSTAK units stacked on the rolling tower. My entire job site kit — drill, saw, multi-tool, nailer, lasers — organized, mobile, and secured. Best tool organization I've ever had."

Source: Amazon reviewer

"The flat tote fits my router and all the bits where no other case worked. Wide opening, deep lid for cords. Finally a case that makes sense for bulky tools."

Source: Amazon reviewer

"Held up on a framing site through a full summer. Dropped from a truck gate twice. Still latches perfectly, no cracks. The plastic is genuinely robust."

Source: Reddit

"I started with one and now I have six. The system grows with your tool collection. That's the selling point — you're not replacing anything, just adding."

Common complaints

Proprietary system — no cross-compatibility…

Bought two of these before realizing my PACKOUT units from Milwaukee won't stack on them. If you're not already in the DEWALT ecosystem, research compatibility before committing.

Source: Reddit

Not IP-rated for rain…

Left my stack of TSTAK boxes on the back of my truck during a rain shower. Tools were fine but there was water in the bottom of the flat tote when I opened it. Not waterproof.

Source: Amazon reviewer

Single latch isn't secure without the lock…

The metal latch holds everything closed but there's no padlock option without the separate TSTAK lock accessory. Budget for the lock if your tools live on a shared job site.

Source: Amazon reviewer

Needs the tower to roll — box doesn't roll solo…

The handle for rolling is on the tower, not the box. A single flat tote is carry-only. Fine if you knew that — not fine if you expected a rolling box.

ClearPick Verdict

The DEWALT TSTAK II Flat Tote is the right storage foundation for DEWALT tool owners who want a scalable, job-site-durable modular system. The wide flat format fits power tools that defeat traditional deep toolboxes, and the TSTAK system's long-term compatibility across all units gives it a future-proof quality. Know the limitations: proprietary format, not waterproof, needs the rolling tower to roll, single latch needs a separate lock for site security.
